Goosanders have returned to Moor Green Lakes.
They are an iconic bird for the reserve and have overwintered here for many years. I first saw them on the 19th, just a few to start with, but hopefully their numbers will increase as the weather gets colder.
Hopefully I will get some good sightings and perhaps some photos.
Throughout the month, duck numbers have steadily increased with good numbers of Wigeon and Teal.
The Linnet flock has increased and now numbers over fifty, whilst I had first winter sighting of a flock of twenty five Lesser Redpoll and four Siskin.
The Great White Egret returned for a few days and fished between two of the lakes, but was continually under threat from Grey Herons and has now departed for pastures new.
On the 16th I went to Farlington, Hampshire. The weather wasn't good, with mist and light rain lasting throughout the day.
Highlights were several splendid male Pintail, one of the most elegant of duck species that can be seen in the UK and twenty or so Avocet, feeding in the mud at low tide.
