Two Barred Crossbill?

The weather has certainly improved this month, (March) with some sunny warm days in amongst some still chilly days with rain/hailstones. In the main it has been dry, at least in my area. On the 2nd, a beautiful sunny warm day, I went to Thursley Common, Surrey,  to see the GREAT GREY SHRIKE before it left the area. After a very brief search in the location where I had seen it in previous years, I saw it nearby, perched in a small silver birch. Whilst watching it through the telescope, it flew from the tree a short distance and then hovered over the ground, before flying down and grabbing a large black beetle in it's bill. It then flew to another tree, where it perched and ate the beetle. I hadn't witnessed the hovering before and was surprised when it did it again to catch another beetle. I continued to watch it for a further 30 minutes or so and had some very good views of this fabulous bird, before it flew away out of sight.
On the 16th, I went to Farnham Heath, Surrey, where a possible male TWO BARRED CROSSBILL, had been seen. I say possible because it has not been confirmed as yet. Anyway the bird was there and very handsome it was. As to whether it is a TWO BARRED CROSSBILL or not, I will leave to the experts to decide. Also seen there were BRAMBLING and DARTFORD WARBLER.
There has been a slow trickle of returning migrants at my local patch, Moor Green Lakes. On the 31st, I saw my first returning SAND MARTIN, a pair of LITTLE RINGED PLOVER and male BLACKCAP, which was singing in a tree by the river. I'm certainly looking  forward to seeing a lot more summer migrants in the coming weeks.

Hi, I'm Roger Milligan. I have been interested in birds since I was a boy growing up in south east London, which was a long time ago. I now live in Farnborough, Hampshire.
