It has been a very warm September here in the south of England, the warmest since records began and long may it last.
Although I don't mind what the weather is like when I am birding, apart from rain, it's lovely to have the sun warming your back when out and about.
Waders were on the move through Moor Green Lakes, Berkshire, early in the month, with Little Stint, Common and Green Sandpiper, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper, Ringed Plover and Ruff, all passing through.
On the 9th, my first Whinchat was at Manor Farm, in company with Stonechat, whilst two Hobby gave a superb aerial flight display at the western end of the reserve.
Lesser Black Backed and Herring gull numbers have steadily increased throughout the month and duck numbers have just started to increase slightly in numbers, as they return from their breeding grounds, as we head towards the winter months.
Flocks of House Martin and Swallow, mainly juveniles, have been feeding up over the reserve lakes, before they head off to Africa.
On the 28th, I was at Keyhaven/Pennington, where I watched hundreds of Swallows, heading south, out over the sea at the start of their journey.
Other migrants, including a Willow Warbler, three Wheatear, six Yellow Wagtail and a large flock of Meadow Pipit, were all busily feeding before commencing their migration.
