Along with Mandarin, Little Egret have also been seen in increasing numbers around the reserve.
Other bird species such as Fieldfare, Redwing and Lesser Redpoll are in very short supply across the reserve, possibly because Scandinavia and Northern Europe have had up to now a mild winter.
This could be the cause of duck numbers being low, they prefer to stay further north.
The female adult Goldeneye has stayed at Colebrook Lake North, but Goosander numbers are the lowest that I can recall. On some days, not one could be seen on any of the lakes.
The heavy rainfall during the month has caused the river to burst it's banks, with the surrounding lakes margins now underwater, hopefully January will be a drier month.
Lastly and for those that celebrate it, I wish you a very Happy New Year and for those that don't, I wish you peace and happiness.
