I made another trip to Crowthorne Wood, Berkshire at the beginning of March to try and get some photos of Crossbill, which I failed to do in February.
The day was sunny with very little breeze. after an hour or so, a pair of Crossbills flew into the top of a pine tree, near to where I had positioned myself.
The female flew off almost immediately, but the male stayed for a minute or two, long enough to allow me take some photos.
The long staying Scaup finally departed Moor Green Lakes at the end of March, looking splendid in his summer/breeding plumage.
It was several years ago that I last saw a Red Legged Partridge at the reserve, but much to my surprise, one appeared on the 8th, walking slowly beside a hedge, opposite the bird hide at the reserve.
There has been a slow trickle of summer migrants arriving, but westerly winds throughout the month have all but held them back on the French coast. Hopefully the wind direction will change shortly and assist them with the channel crossing.
A pair of Oystercatchers have started to nest at the reserve, possibly the same pair that were successful in raising a brood last year.
On the 29th, I went to Frensham Little Pond, where a female Ring Necked Duck had been reported over the previous few days.
After a lot of searching around the pond, I eventually found it, but it was too far away for a photo.
From there I went to Edenbrook Country Park, Fleet, for the male Garganey that had been there for about a week.
I did wonder if it was the same bird that had appeared last year as an eclipse male, anyway I was able to see it and it showed very well in full summer/breeding plumage.
